ABC hit a multi-year high and a multi-year low for its season-opening college football doubleheader.
The Florida State/Oklahoma State Saturday Night Football game drew a 4.1 overnight rating on ABC, down 18% from Clemson/Georgia last year (5.0) and down 13% from Michigan/Alabama in 2012 (4.7). The 4.1 is the lowest for the season-debut of Saturday Night Football since LSU/UNC in 2010 (2.8).
Despite the lower numbers, the game crushed its primetime competition — beating Wisconsin/LSU on ESPN by 64% (2.5) and Fresno State/USC on FOX by 356% (0.9).
ABC’s afternoon game between West Virginia and Alabama also earned a 4.1 overnight, up 86% from regional action both last year and in 2012 (2.2). The 4.1 is the highest for the afternoon window on week one of the season since at least 2004.
