ESPN’s Marty Smith is staying put despite the network’s loss of NASCAR rights. In other news, Scott Hamilton will contribute to figure skating coverage on NBC despite being demoted, and TNT has tapped NBA VP of officiating Joe Borgia as a rules analyst.
Marty Smith Stays With ESPN
- ESPN NASCAR reporter Marty Smith has reached a contract extension to remain with the network. With ESPN losing NASCAR rights, Smith will serve as a bureau reporter based out of Charlotte — adding the NFL, NBA and college sports to his NASCAR duties. Before joining ESPN in 2006, Smith was a writer for NASCAR.com. (ESPN Media Zone)
Scott Hamilton Will Contribute to Figure Skating on NBC
- NBC Sports figure skating analyst Scott Hamilton will remain with the network as a ‘special contributor’ on major events, the network announced Wednesday. Along with Sandra Bezic and Tom Hammond, Hamilton was demoted from NBC’s lead team in favor of Johnny Weir, Tara Lipinski and Terry Gannon. (NBC Sports Group Press Box)
NBA VP of Officiating to Contribute to NBA on TNT
- NBA vice president of referee operations Joe Borgia will contribute to NBA coverage on TNT this season, it was announced during Tuesday’s Rockets/Heat preseason game. Stationed at the NBA’s replay center in Secaucus, NJ, Borgia will be called upon to explain complex calls — presumably à la Mike Pereira on FOX NFL coverage. (NBA on TNT, 10/21)
