The selection show for the inaugural college football playoff attracted a strong overnight rating on ESPN.
The first half-hour of the College Football Playoff Selection Show drew a 3.4 overnight rating on ESPN Sunday afternoon. Overnights for last year’s comparable BCS Selection Show were not available, but the telecast drew a 1.1 final rating.
Barring an unprecedented drop from the overnight to the final rating, the first half-hour will end up topping every BCS Selection Show since the event last aired on FOX in 2009. The full Selection Show, which ran from 12:30-3 PM ET, drew a 1.6 overnight.
To put the numbers in perspective, the Men’s NCAA Tournament Selection Show drew a 4.2 overnight in March. That telecast, of course, aired on broadcast network (CBS) in a better timeslot (6 PM ET).
Shifting to on-field action, ESPN drew a 1.4 overnight for Kansas State/Baylor Saturday night — up 27% from last year’s comparable Stanford/Arizona State Pac-12 Championship Game (1.1). Baylor’s win was crushed head-to-head by the FSU/Georgia Tech ACC Championship on ABC (6.9) and the Ohio State/Wisconsin Big Ten title game on FOX (3.7).
