The NHL Winter Classic earned its lowest overnight ever.
The Blackhawks/Capitals NHL Winter Classic drew a 2.3 overnight rating on NBC Thursday afternoon, down 21% from Maple Leafs/Red Wings last year (2.9), down a tick from Rangers/Flyers in 2012 (2.4), and the lowest overnight ever for the annual outdoor game (seven telecasts dating back to 2008).
The previous low was the 2.4 in 2012. Every other Winter Classic has had at least a 2.6 overnight.
Despite the lower numbers, the 2.3 overnight is the eighth-highest for an NHL regular season game since 1996 — trailing the other six Winter Classic telecasts and a regional window on FOX in 1999 (2.5).
