Turner Sports’ Marv Albert will not call Saturday’s Elite 8 matchup between Kentucky and Notre Dame. Also, longtime Utah Jazz broadcaster ‘Hot’ Rod Hundley has died, and former ESPN college basketball analyst Steve Lavin is out of the coaching ranks.
Albert to Miss Kentucky/Notre Dame Game
- Turner Sports play-by-play voice Marv Albert is under the weather and will miss Saturday’s Kentucky/Notre Dame NCAA Tournament regional final on TBS. Brian Anderson will fill-in alongside analysts Chris Webber and Len Elmore. This is the first time Albert has missed an NCAA Tournament assignment since Turner began airing the games in 2011. The broadcast team, it should be noted, was already missing the services of Craig Sager — who is still recovering from leukemia. (Turner Sports)
Hundley, Longtime Voice of Jazz, Dies
- Former Utah Jazz broadcaster ‘Hot’ Rod Hundley died Friday at the age of 80. Hundley was the voice of the Jazz from 1974 to his retirement in 2009, having previously served as a color analyst for the Phoenix Suns and Los Angeles Lakers. He reprised his role with the Lakers after his retirement, filling in as a guest analyst during the 2009-10 season. On a national level, Hundley was a play-by-play voice and game analyst for the NBA on CBS. (ESPN.com)
Fmr. ESPN Analyst Lavin Available
- Former ESPN college basketball analyst Steve Lavin has been fired as head coach of the St. John’s men’s basketball team. Lavin worked for ESPN from 2004-10 and served as a guest analyst for CBS/Turner Sports coverage of the NCAA Tournament in 2012. The New York Post reported earlier this week that Lavin has been in contact with television networks about possible roles. (NY Post [1] [2])
