Entering the final round in contention, Tiger Woods lifted the Wyndham Championship to its best overnight since the 1990s.
Final round coverage of the PGA Tour Wyndham Championship earned a 3.9 overnight rating on CBS Sunday afternoon, up 143% from last year (1.6) and up 179% from 2013 (1.4). According to Sports Business Daily, the 3.9 is tied with 1995 as the highest for final round coverage since 1993 (4.2).
The 3.9 is also tied as the highest overnight for a non-major PGA Tour event this year, matching The Players Championship on NBC in March. Going back further, it is tied as the highest for a non-major telecast since the 2013 Players Championship, which Woods won (5.7).
Woods entered Sunday in a tie for second place, though he quickly fell out of the running. It was his first time playing the Wyndham Championship, and a win would have gotten him into the FedEx Cup playoffs.
Tiger’s presence marked a dramatic turnaround for the tournament, which has not been much of a draw in recent years. It failed to crack a 2.0 overnight each year from 2003-14, peaking at a 1.8 in 2009.
Saturday’s third round action drew a 3.2 overnight, up 220% from last year (1.0) and up 256% from 2013 (0.9). Excluding majors and the Ryder Cup, the 3.2 is the highest for any third round telecast since at least 2008.
