On a night filled with college football and baseball playoff games, Mexico/USA soccer more than held its own.
The Mexico/United States CONCACAF Cup playoff drew an approximate 2.9 final rating and 6.4 million viewers across the Univision networks and Fox Sports 1 Saturday night, the largest audience for a match between the rivals since a World Cup qualifier in March 2013 (7.0M).
Univision/Univision Deportes Network drew a 2.2 and 4.8 million for the match, while Fox Sports 1 chipped in a 0.8 and 1.6 million — its largest audience ever for men’s soccer. By comparison, the Mexico/Jamaica CONCACAF Gold Cup final had a combined 6.6 million viewers in June, with 5.7 million on Univision/UDN and 818,000 on Fox Sports 1.
The combined audience for Mexico’s win topped Saturday’s Cubs/Cardinals (4.6M) and Mets/Dodgers (4.2M) baseball playoff games, as well as ESPN’s Arkansas/Alabama college football game (4.8M). It was the most-watched sporting event of the day.
