Jordan Spieth continues to be golf’s biggest story in the post-Tiger Woods era.
Final round coverage of the PGA Tour at Colonial earned a 1.9 final rating and 2.9 million viewers on CBS last Sunday afternoon, flat in ratings and up 5% in viewership from last year (1.9, 2.8M) and up 46% and 59%, respectively, from 2014 (1.3, 1.8M).
Spieth’s win, his second of the season, tied the tournament’s best final round rating in a decade — matching last year and 2011 as the highest rated since 2006 (2.0).
Five of the past six PGA Tour windows on broadcast have hit a multi-year high in ratings and viewership, including Saturday’s third round. That telecast had a 1.3 and 1.8 million, up 18% in ratings and viewership from last year (1.1, 1.5M) and up 86% and 77%, respectively, from 2014 (0.7, 1.0M).
The suddenly surging numbers represent a reversal of fortune for the PGA, which just weeks ago was mired in a long ratings slump.
