It is still the highest rated All-Star Game in sports, but Major League Baseball’s midsummer classic hit another record-low in the metered markets.
The 2016 MLB All-Star Game earned a 6.4 overnight rating on FOX Tuesday night, the lowest ever for the annual exhibition. The 6.4 is down 18% from the previous low set last year (7.8) and also marks a 20% decline from 2014 (8.0). The All-Star Game has now earned its lowest or second-lowest overnight in seven straight years.
Kansas City was Tuesday’s top market with an 18.8 rating, but as Sports Business Daily noted that marked a 40% decline from last year’s 31.4. St. Louis ranked second with a 10.4, down 42% from last year’s 17.9. Host market San Diego had just a 9.8 rating for the game, the lowest for an All-Star host since Los Angeles in 2010 (8.6) — notable considering that San Diego is a relatively small market to begin with.
Despite the lower numbers, the MLB All-Star Game comfortably topped the NBA All-Star Game on TNT and TBS (5.4), the NFL Pro Bowl on ESPN (5.0) and the NHL All-Star Game on NBCSN (1.2).
