After scoring its highest rating since 1997 last year, the PGA Wyndham Championship fell to its lowest mark since 2008.
Final round coverage of the PGA Tour Wyndham Championship earned a 1.0 final rating and 1.4 million viewers on CBS last Sunday afternoon, down 70% in ratings and 72% in viewership from last year (3.4, 5.0M) and down 23% and 25%, respectively, from 2014 (1.3, 1.9M).
The 1.0 rating is the lowest for final round coverage of the event since 2008 (0.9), not coincidentally another Olympic year. Since moving to its current August date in 2007, the three lowest rated final rounds have all been in Olympic years — 2008, this year and 2012 (1.1).
For the season, the 1.0 is the third-lowest for any final round window on broadcast, ahead of the John Deere Classic the previous week (0.7) and the Hartford Open two weeks prior (0.9).
Last year’s final round was an unusually strong draw as Tiger Woods, playing in his last tournament to-date, was in contention into the final round. The 3.4 rating was the highest for the tournament since 1997, and the highest for any non-major golf telecast since 2013.
Third round action last Saturday had a 0.7 and 971,000 — down 76% in ratings and 77% in viewership from last year (2.9, 4.2M) and down 30% and 29%, respectively, from 2014 (1.0, 1.4M). The 0.7 is tied with 2008 as the lowest for third-round coverage of the event since 2006, the last time the tournament aired opposite the NFL (0.5).
