One year after every NFL rightsholder failed in pursuit of Peyton Manning, Fox Sports is apparently pursuing another high-profile QB.
ESPN.com reported Friday that Fox Sports is interested in the services of Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo, whose playing career is in flux. According to the report, Fox would want Romo to fill the vacancy left by its #2 analyst John Lynch, who left the network to become general manager of the San Francisco 49ers.
Romo has no broadcasting experience, though neither did Lynch when he joined Fox days after his retirement in 2008. It is worth noting that Lynch did not rise to the #2 broadcast team until several years afterward.
In an interesting quirk, Friday’s news was not broken by a sports media reporter but by ESPN’s Adam Schefter — one of Fox Sports’ chief rivals on NFL scoops. Schefter previously reported last month that Romo had “received strong interest from television networks” but had no plans to retire.
Fox Sports has made a habit of acquiring big names fresh from the playing field, having hired Alex Rodriguez while he was still playing with the Yankees and Jeff Gordon while he was still racing in NASCAR.
