With Tiger Woods in contention, last weekend’s PGA Tour ratings were quite strong — until the rain started.
Third round coverage of the PGA Tour BMW Championship earned a 1.7 rating and 2.43 million viewers on NBC last Saturday, up 55% in ratings and 43% in viewership from last year (1.1, 1.7M) and up 89% and 107% respectively from 2016 (0.9, 1.17M).
It was the highest rated and most-watched telecast at the tournament since 2012, when Phil Mickelson won and Woods finished third. Final round coverage had a 2.5 and 3.6 million that year.
The third round also delivered strong numbers on Golf Channel, which scored a 0.9 (+88%) and 1.45 million (+95%) for its coverage — the tournament’s largest audience on cable since at least 2012.
Final round coverage was postponed to Monday due to rain. NBC’s rainout coverage had a 0.7 and 1.02 million on Sunday. Golf Channel’s live coverage on Monday had 893,000, trailing only Saturday’s window as the tournament’s largest cable audience since ’12.
Last Friday’s second round action, which was moved up several hours due to rain, had 432,000.
