Even with Tiger Woods finishing in the top ten, last week’s WGC-Mexico Championship was a mixed bag in the ratings.
Last Sunday’s final round of the PGA Tour/WGC-Mexico Championship earned a 2.2 rating and 3.42 million viewers on NBC, down 15% in ratings and 13% in viewership from last year (2.6, 3.93M) and flat and down 1% respectively from 2017 (2.2, 3.46M).
Dustin Johnson‘s win was the least-watched final round of the event since 2015 (3.3M). Until 2016, the tournament was contested at Doral.
Ratings and viewership fell despite the presence of Woods, who had not played the tournament since 2014. Though he was not in contention, Woods finished in a tie for tenth, his best finish at the event since his 2013 win.
The tournament fared far better — relative to last year — on Saturday. Third round action pulled had a 1.9 and 2.87 million viewers, up 36% in both measures from last year (1.4, 2.11M) and up 19% and 15% respectively from 2017 (1.6, 2.49M).
It was the most-watched third round of the event since 2013 (3.36M).
Lead-in coverage on Golf Channel delivered a 0.7 (+40%) and 969,000 (+41%) on Saturday and a 0.8 (+27%) and 1.25 million (+31%) on Sunday.
