Another week, another ratings bump for the NFL on FOX. Also: viewership hit a low for the NFL in London; Lakers-Mavericks neared an early season-high on ESPN; F1 scored yet another increase.
FOX NFL ratings continue to rise
Sunday’s Week 9 NFL singleheader (mostly Vikings-Chiefs or Eagles-Bears) averaged a 10.5 rating and 18.27 million viewers on FOX, the highest for the window in Week 9 of the season since 2016 (ft. Cowboys-Browns: 11.6, 20.15M).
Ratings increased 19% and viewership 22% from last year on CBS (8.8, 14.96M) and 25% and 29% respectively from 2017 on FOX (ft. Falcons-Panthers: 8.4, 14.21M).
FOX is now averaging 18.66 million viewers for its Sunday NFL coverage this season (+8%), its highest through nine weeks since 2016. Including Thursday Night Football, 16 of the network’s 19 NFL telecasts have increased over last year.
Texans-Jaguars London game hits low
NFL Network averaged a 1.9 rating and 2.96 million viewers for Sunday’s Texans-Jaguars NFL International Series game from London, marking the least-watched NFL telecast since a late night Chargers-Raiders game on the network in 2013 (2.53M).
The previous low was 3.08 million for Panthers-Buccaneers on NFL Network in Week 6, which aired in the same early morning window. It tied that game as the lowest rated NFL telecast since ’13.
Lakers-Mavs does well for ESPN
Lakers-Mavericks averaged a 1.6 rating and 2.57 million viewers on ESPN NBA Friday last week, trailing only Lakers-Clippers on Opening Night (2.2, 3.58M) as the highest rated and most-watched game of the weeks-old NBA season.
Earlier in the night, Rockets-Nets had a 0.9 and 1.42 million. ESPN did not carry any games on the comparable night last year.
USGP latest F1 race to increase
The Formula 1 United States Grand Prix averaged a 0.6 rating and 861,000 viewers on ABC Sunday afternoon, up a tick in ratings and 9% in viewership from last year (0.5, 793K), but down 12% and 18% respectively from 2017 on NBC (0.65, 1.05M).
The race ranks third for the season behind the Canadian GP on ABC in June (1.13M) and the Monaco GP on ESPN in May (908K). Sixteen of 19 F1 races have increased over last year.
