With no NBA competition, the Stanley Cup Playoffs took top honors among sporting events on Wednesday, May 29.
Wednesday’s Stars-Oilers NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs Game 4 averaged a combined 1.82 million viewers across TNT (1.76M) and truTV (65K), up 15% from Golden Knights-Stars on ESPN last year (1.58M) and the most-watched sporting event of the day. Compared to last year’s conference final on TNT, Panthers-Hurricanes in the East, Game 4 viewership declined 2% from 1.86 million.
Despite swapping out American market Las Vegas for Canadian market Edmonton — which does not count toward U.S. Nielsen ratings — this year’s West Final is averaging 1.65 million through four games, up 7% from last year.
Major League Baseball placed second for the night among sportscasts as MLB Network averaged 354,000 for an abbreviated regional window that was joined in progress. Earlier in the day, the network averaged 225,000 for a primetime regional window and 196,000 for an afternoon matinee.
In third place, Iga Swiatek’s second round French Open win over Naomi Osaka averaged 309,000 on Tennis Channel, the network’s most-watched match of the tournament thus far. A re-air drew 170,000 later in the evening.
Further down the dial, NBA TV averaged 134,000 for an Aces-Lynx WNBA regular season game and Golf Channel drew 126,000 for the NCAA golf team semifinals. Not making the below chart, an LA FC-Minnesota Major League Soccer match drew 34,000 on FS1.
