Oklahoma’s comeback win in the Women’s College World Series topped a quiet day sports viewership on Tuesday, June 4.
Tuesday’s Oklahoma-Florida Women’s College World Series elimination game averaged 989,000 viewers on ESPN, down from Oklahoma-UCLA two years ago, the last time the Sooners played a winner-take-all game (1.04M). Oklahoma’s comeback, extra inning win delivered the top sports audience of the day.
Placing second, a United States women’s national team soccer match with Korea averaged a combined 553,000 across TNT (462K) and truTV (91K) — up from the sides’ previous match on Sunday (423K). Over on sibling TBS, a Twins-Yankees Major League Baseball game drew 462,000 — the network’s top audience of the season and a 68% increase over Mets-Braves last year (275K).
Further down the dial, Carlos Alcaraz’ win over Stefanos Tsitsipas topped French Open coverage with 413,000 on Tennis Channel.
In the WNBA, NBA TV drew 239,000 for a Liberty-Sky regular season game — the fourth-largest WNBA audience ever on the network, which became Nielsen rated in 2010. All four have come this season, with the other three involving the Fever. Prior to this season, the record for a WNBA game on NBA TV was 210,000 for a 2014 Lynx-Mercury winner-take-all playoff game for a berth in the WNBA Finals.
Beyond live sports, the debut of the ESPN 30 For 30 documentary “I’m Just Here for the Riot” (about the 2011 Vancouver riots that followed the Canucks’ loss in the Stanley Cup Final) averaged 311,000, with an encore at 102,000 on ESPN2. It led into the debut of the E:60 documentary “No Easy Victories” (about the 1994 New York Rangers Stanley Cup run) at 221,000.
