On the Air: Peter Schrager and ESPN’s authenticity era

ESPN’s “embrace authenticity” era has identified one of its newest faces: Peter Schrager. The network announced Wednesday new daily show, “Big Day with Peter Schrager” will premiere on Sept. 10. Andrew Marchand of The Athletic was first with the news.

The new show marks a return of sorts to daytime TV for Schrager, one of the original panelists on NFL Network’s hit show “Good Morning Football.” Premiering in August 2016, GMFB launched the television careers of Schrager, Nate Burleson, Kyle Brandt, and Kay Adams — borrowing from the brightly lit world of network daytime talk shows while sidestepping many of the elements that often make those shows feel forced or insincere. “GMFB” worked not merely because of its content, but because its cast shared a chemistry that is hard to manufacture.

That easygoing energy has become more desirable in recent days, as — according to a report by Puck’s John Ourand — ESPN is shifting its focus from contrived debate to more relaxed, less combative discussion.

If you’re thinking this announcement signals the dissolution of shows like “First Take,” think again. For all its faults, “First Take” still draws enough attention to remain relevant. As the football season ramps up, expect Stephen A. Smith and his cast of characters to unleash scorching takes and plenty of desk-pounding theatrics.

But the overall shift in tone is impossible to deny and ESPN executives Burke Magnus and Mike Foss are the driving forces behind it. Earlier this year, Ourand described Foss on his “The Varsity” podcast as “the Pat McAfee whisperer,” underscoring Foss’ role as something of a liaison between the eccentric star host and the network.

In Wednesday’s column, Marchand described Foss and Magnus as having “leaned in heavily on McAfee with his daily program, his featured role on ‘College GameDay’ and, this season, ‘Monday Night Countdown.'”

Perhaps no name in sports television has become more synonymous with the idea of “authenticity” than Pat McAfee. The former NFL punter has built his brand on a distinctly different vision of sports talk — one that is more laid back, irreverent and driven by good vibes. While some of McAfee’s reported behavior behind the scenes — and even some on-air antics — suggests he takes himself more seriously than he lets on and that his authentic presentation is at least somewhat (if not considerably) disingenuous, his carefully constructed image and show have resonated with a wide audience for many years, well before he took the program to ESPN.

Stephen A. Smith has built his on-air reputation as the loudmouth pundit, the pugnacious suit-clad journalist-turned-commentator who shoots straight and takes no prisoners. McAfee’s persona couldn’t be more different. He’s the tank top-wearing, fun-loving goofball from Pennsylvania, the misfit who beat the odds, the grateful jock who bet on himself.

It is McAfee’s world — with the endorsement of Foss and Magnus — that makes the Schrager promotion so noteworthy, though not entirely surprising. While it is not unfair to wonder if Schrager would have received this opportunity in a McAfee-less ESPN, his prior on-air work speaks for itself. With buoyant energy, Schrager can seamlessly transition from host to commentator to reporter. That kind of versatility earned him various roles at Fox Sports, where he worked from 2013 until joining ESPN in April 2025.

In 2026, with a glut of audio and video podcasts, YouTube channels, and social media influencers, how can success for Schrager be measured? He is an intelligent football mind who understands TV, but it is hard to deny how much he benefitted from GMFB’s excellent ensemble cast. If anything, the true face of the original cast was Nate Burleson, who has gone on to enjoy TV stardom that surpasses that of the other panelists.

Schrager’s ESPN’s work has been good, but it’s come in smaller doses. A spirited 10-minute segment on “Get Up” or a friendly back-and-forth with Dan Orlovsky on “NFL Live” is one thing, but leading your own show is a different beast entirely. Schrager’s 2 p.m. time slot can’t compare to the cozy late-night window Scott Van Pelt received when he began his new “SportsCenter” in 2014.

More broadly, it must be asked how many personalities can attract the kind of loyal following that makes the juice worth the squeeze. Yes, there are obvious detractors, but McAfee and Smith are in a class of their own. When others — like Pablo Torre, Michael Smith, and Bomani Jones — have been given similar opportunities, the results have landed somewhere between bad and disastrous.

Will a Schrager-fronted show resonate? It will be an uphill climb, and no one can know for certain. What we do know is that shows like Schrager’s represent a noticeable shift in the spirit of ESPN’s daytime programming.

Plus: Can Dianna Russini make a comeback?

The Athletic has concluded its investigation of former NFL insider Dianna Russini. The inquiry found that Russini’s undisclosed relationship with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel violated The Athletic’s standards. Russini, who declined to be interviewed for the investigation, offered a statement saying, “I stand by any and all reporting I’ve ever done in my career.”

Less than a week before his team faces the Seattle Seahawks in the NFL’s opening game of the season, Vrabel has seemingly put the scandal behind him, telling the media, “We’re moved on and focused on Seattle and focused on the Patriots and focused on getting better this week.”

For the moment, Russini’s promising career has come to a standstill, but how long will that last? Her future in journalism will likely be scrutinized more intensely, but conventional reporting is hardly the only lane available for her. Resurfacing as a sort of hybrid insider/commentator seems likely. If we’ve learned anything recently, it’s that the ethical standards that once governed journalism no longer seem to apply — at least not to the same degree.

At some point soon, football fans should expect to Russini to return. Though she’ll face a certain amount of ridicule, the sports world has a short attention span. Eventually, it will move on to the next controversy, leaving Russini space to carve out a new place in an increasingly crowded media landscape.
