- Starting August 11, SportsCenter will take on a new look. Instead reruns of the late edition of SportsCenter airing back to back on weekday mornings, the show will go live for nine hours, from 6 AM ET to 3 PM. The nine-hour SportsCenter will be divided into three separate three-hour shifts, each with a different pair of anchors. Former NBC Sports host Hannah Storm will co-anchor the 9 AM – 12 PM shift.
- During coverage of The Preakness Stakes, NBC will hold a panel discussion on the recent death of a horse during the Kentucky Derby. Bob Costas will moderate the discussion, which includes guest Bill Rhoden, who recently “blasted the sport of kings as ‘only a couple of steps removed from animal fighting.’“
- Versus and the NHL are discussing a new wrinkle in television coverage that may resemble a blast from the past. Earlier this week, USA Today reported that the league and its cable partner are discussing introducing “puck tracking” to telecasts starting next season. Puck tracking, reminiscent of the “glowing puck” FOX used in the 1990s, would attempt to address problems viewers have keeping track of the puck during games. While high definition television is supposed to alleviate the problem, Versus has been “pushing for a new puck-tracking system.”
