Without some of the big names of previous years, the UEFA Champions League Final hit a five-year viewership low on FOX.
Last Saturday’s Bayern Munich/Dortmund UEFA Champions League Final drew a 0.9 final rating and 1.4 million viewers on FOX, down 18% in ratings and 32% in viewership from Chelsea/Bayern Munich last year (1.1, 2.0M), and down 31% and 47%, respectively, from Barcelona/Manchester United in 2011 (1.3, 2.6M).
The match ranks as the least-viewed UEFA final on an English-language network since Manchester United/Chelsea on ESPN2 in 2008 (1.1M).
Keep in mind last week’s match also aired on Fox Deportes. Ratings and viewership for the Spanish-language broadcast were not available.
Despite the lower numbers, the UEFA Champions League Final had by far the lowest median age of any sporting event on broadcast over the holiday weekend. The median viewer for the match was 41 years old — compared to 59 years for baseball on FOX, 58 years for the Indy 500 on ABC, 54 years for NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600 on FOX, 53 years for the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix on NBC, and 46 years for the NHL on NBC.
