Tuesday’s Mexico/Jamaica World Cup qualifier was the top sports draw of the night. In other news, the Women’s College World Series final had a slight decline in viewership on ESPN and ESPN2, and the NBA had a surprising win over the NHL in Buffalo.
Mexico/Jamaica Qualifier Tops Night
- Tuesday’s Mexico/Jamaica World Cup qualifier earned just under 2.9 million viewers on Telemundo, the top sports program of the day on any network. The match outdrew Tuesday’s Blackhawks/Kings Stanley Cup playoff game on corporate sibling NBC Sports Network by 58% (1.8M). (NBC Universal Media Village)
Women’s CWS Sets Local Records, But Down Nationally
- Game 2 of the Oklahoma/Tennessee Women’s College World Series final drew a 1.3 million viewers on ESPN Tuesday night, down 6% from Oklahoma/Alabama Game 2 last year (1.4M). Monday’s Game 1 drew 1.2 million on ESPN2, down 11% from last year’s Game 1 (1.3M). In Knoxville (TN), Game 1 drew an 11.9 rating — the highest local rating in any market for the WCWS since 2007 — and Game 2 scored a 7.8. In Oklahoma City, Games 1 and 2 drew ratings of 6.6 and 6.7, respectively, the market’s best ever for the WCWS. (ESPN Media Zone)
NBA Beats NHL — in Buffalo
- Game 7 of the Pacers/Heat NBA playoff series drew a 6.0 rating on TNT in the Buffalo market Monday night, more than a full point below the national average (7.1) — but nearly double the rating of the Bruins/Penguins Stanley Cup playoff game on NBC Sports Network (3.2). Keep in mind Buffalo is one of the hottest markets for the NHL, and one of the coldest for the NBA. Pacers/Heat also topped the Yankees’ game against the Indians on YES Network (2.6).
