Though not particularly impressive for a Sunday night, overnight ratings for the Winter Olympics bounced back somewhat on NBC.
Primetime coverage of the 2014 Sochi Olympics earned a 13.2 overnight rating on NBC, down 11% from Vancouver in 2010 (14.9). Overnights for the comparable night of the 2006 Turin Olympics were not available. The comparable night of the most recent Olympics — London in 2012 — earned a 19.5 overnight.
Sunday’s 13.2 overnight marks a solid recovery from the previous two nights, when NBC earned overnights of 11.7 (Friday) and 10.3 (Saturday). Keep in mind that Sunday is the most-watched night of the week and Friday and Saturday are the least-watched.
Locally, Kansas City was the top draw for Sunday’s action, with a 20.0 rating. Milwaukee ranked second (19.6), with Buffalo (19.1), Minneapolis (18.6) and Ft. Myers, FL (18.1) rounding out the top five. Salt Lake City, usually in the top five, ranked tenth (17.2).
NBCSN continued to show dramatic growth over its first Olympics. Sunday’s live coverage earned a 1.8 overnight, up 151% from 2012.
