ESPN’s first MLB playoff game in eight years did well despite a lopsided score.
The Giants/Pirates National League Wild Card Game drew a 4.1 overnight rating on ESPN Wednesday night, up 11% from Rays/Indians on TBS last year (3.7). Last year’s N.L. Wild Card Game between the Pirates and Reds aired on a Tuesday and drew a 3.4.
According to ESPN, the 4.1 is tied as the highest ever for an MLB Wild Card Game, matching Orioles/Rangers in 2012. Keep in mind that Orioles/Rangers game was reported to have a 4.4 overnight at the time.
Overnights increased despite the fact that the Giants won the game in a drama-free 8-0 blowout.
