The debut of the Premier Boxing Champions on CBS could not match the network’s most recent boxing telecast.
Coverage of the PBC on CBS earned a 1.0 final rating and 1.4 million viewers on CBS last Saturday afternoon, down 17% in ratings from the network’s most recent boxing telecast — a Showtime Boxing special in December 2012 (1.2). Viewership was not available for that telecast.
Compared to the PBC’s NBC debut in March, which was also the series’ first telecast on any network, ratings and viewership declined by 52% and 58%, respectively, from a 2.1 and 3.4 million. Keep in mind that telecast aired in primetime and received greater promotion.
A more flattering comparison is to the most recent afternoon boxing telecast on broadcast TV, an NBC Sports Fight Night telecast last September. Ratings and viewership soared 100% and 86%, respectively, over the 0.5 and 763,000 for that window.
Though the numbers were not particularly impressive, the PBC on CBS earned a higher rating than Sunday’s edition of the NHL on NBC (0.9). The NHL drew a larger audience (1.5M to 1.4M).
