Mexico’s return boosted the Gold Cup final on Univision, while the United States’ absence sank the game on FS1.
The Mexico/Jamaica CONCACAF Gold Cup final drew a 2.3 final rating and 5.7 million viewers on Univision and Univision Deportes Network Sunday night, up 147% in viewership from United States/Panama in 2013 (2.3M), but down 26% and 28%, respectively, from Mexico/United States in 2011 (3.1, 8.0M).
Mexico’s win earned the largest audience of the tournament, easily topping the previous mark of 4.7 million for the Mexico/Costa Rica quarterfinal on Univision/UDN.
Fox Sports 1 drew a mere 0.4 and 818,000 for its coverage of the match, down 71% in ratings and 65% in viewership from 2013 on the FOX broadcast network (1.4, 2.4M) and down a tick and 26%, respectively, from 2011 on Fox Soccer (0.5, 1.1M).
The combined audience of 6.5 million viewers marks a 38% increase over 2013 (4.7M) and a 29% drop from 2011 (9.1M). Among adults 18-49, the Univision telecast drew a 2.6 rating — topping all other programs for the week on broadcast or cable — while FS1 scored a 0.3. Combined, the match had a 3.0 in the demo.
