The IndyCar season got off to a much stronger start on ABC.
IndyCar Series racing from St. Petersburg drew a 1.1 overnight rating on ABC Sunday afternoon, up 38% from last year’s race (0.8) and up 83% from 2014 (0.6). The 1.1 is tied as the highest for the race since 2011 (1.2), matching 2012.
Last year’s race had a later timeslot and an NBA lead-in, but aired directly opposite the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight. By contrast, this year’s race faced softer competition from the SEC Tournament final on ESPN (2.1), the Atlantic-10 final on CBS (1.1) and the NHL on NBC (0.9).
Even with the stronger performance, IndyCar still ranked behind NASCAR’s Xfinity Series, which scored a 1.2 overnight on FOX Saturday afternoon.
