It was not much of a match, but the United States’ Copa America semifinal delivered strong numbers on both English and Spanish language television.
Tuesday’s Argentina/United States Copa America semifinal earned 3.3 million viewers on Fox Sports 1, marking the network’s largest audience ever for men’s soccer. The previous high was 2.1 million for USA/Ecuador in the quarterfinals.
The United States’ five Copa America matches delivered five of the six largest men’s soccer audiences ever on FS1 and each of the top four. Keep in mind the network’s overall high for soccer remains 4.7 million for USA/Colombia in last year’s Women’s World Cup.
Coverage of the same match on Univision and Univision Deportes Network earned 4.8 million viewers, trailing only Mexico’s four matches as the largest audience of the tournament on any network.
The other semifinal, Chile/Colombia on Wednesday night, had 3.4 million on Univision and 971,000 on FS1. The match experienced lengthy delays due to weather. In addition, unlike the figures listed for Argentina/USA, the Chile/Colombia numbers likely include pre-match coverage.
