In the ratings, Jordan Spieth is not yet a match for Tiger Woods — or Phil Mickelson.
Final round coverage of the British Open earned a 3.6 overnight rating on NBC Sunday morning, down 8% from last year, when Mickelson lost a duel to Henrik Stenson (3.9), but up 38% from 2015, when coverage aired on ESPN and was postponed to a Monday (2.6). Figures do not include NBC’s first two hours of coverage, which pulled a 1.4.
Spieth’s dramatic win tied the tournament’s second-highest final round overnight since 2009 (3.9), matching Mickelson’s win in 2013.
It also tied the third-highest golf overnight of the year, matching the final round of the U.S. Open on FOX and behind the third and final rounds of The Masters on CBS (4.6, 7.6).
Saturday’s third round action drew a 2.4 overnight, down 13% from last year (2.8) and down 8% from 2015, when coverage aired on a Sunday (2.6). That does not include NBC’s first two hours, which had a 1.2.
