Olympic hockey ratings hit a timeslot high on NBCSN Monday. In other news, the NHL scored another increase on NBC last weekend, NASCAR’s Xfinity Series opened on a low note, and Premier Boxing Champions posted one of its smallest broadcast network audiences.
U.S. Men’s Hockey Hits Timeslot High on NBCSN
Monday’s United States-Slovakia Olympic men’s hockey game had 1.6 million viewers on NBCSN, the network’s second-largest hockey audience after 10 PM ET. A 2014 Wild-Blackhawks NHL playoff game holds the top spot (1.95M). NBCSN’s full primetime window, which featured ice dancing for most of the night, had 2.1 million.
Figures for Tuesday’s Czech Republic-United States quarterfinal, which eliminated the U.S. from the Olympics, were not immediately available. In an interview published Monday, NBC Sports chairman Mark Lazarus told Sports Illustrated that Olympic hockey viewership has declined in the high 20-low 30 percent range. The NHL barred its players from participating in the Games.
