Two of ESPN’s most well-known personalities are facing serious medical issues.
The same week ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale underwent throat surgery that will sideline him for two months, SportsCenter and NBA Countdown anchor Stuart Scott has revealed that he will undergo chemotherapy this winter.
Scott underwent an emergency appendectomy after falling ill prior to a Monday Night Football game late in November, and has been off the air ever since. After the initial appendectomy, “Scott had a second precautionary surgery to remove the tissue surrounding his appendix. Doctors treating Scott are confident any cancerous tissue was removed, but recommended preventative chemotherapy.”
Despite undergoing chemotherapy, Scott will return to NBA Shootaround tonight, and will host NBA Countdown on ABC Christmas Day.
This is not the first time an NBA studio host has taken to the air while battling cancer. In 2006, TNT NBA host Ernie Johnson revealed on-air that he had non-Hodgkins lymphoma.
