NBC Sports is adding one of the biggest names in sports broadcasting history to its roster for the 2010 Winter Olympics.
Sunday Night Football play-by-play man Al Michaels has been named the weekend and weekday host for NBC’s coverage of the 2010 Vancouver Olympics. Michaels will host over 50 hours of coverage on NBC, his first Olympic assignment since he called hockey on ABC during the 1988 Calgary Olympics.
Michaels, a longtime ABC Sports broadcaster prior to joining NBC in 2006, is perhaps best known for his famous “Do you believe in miracles?” line during the network’s coverage of the United States’ defeat of the Soviet Union in a 1980 Olympic hockey game. In addition to the 1980 Olympics, Michaels has been part of the broadcast team for five other Olympics, including the 1972 Winter Games on NBC.
Michaels will likely replace Jim Lampley, who hosted weekday coverage of the 2004, 2006 and 2008 Olympics. It is unknown what role Lampley will play in NBC’s 2010 coverage.
