The power of the Yankees can be summed up thusly: last Saturday’s Mets/Cardinals 20-inning classic drew the same rating as the Yankees’ 22-4 loss to the Indians last year.
Regional MLB action featuring the Mets’ win over the Cardinals drew a 2.4 final rating and 3.7 million viewers on FOX last Saturday, flat in ratings and up 5% in viewership from coverage featuring Indians/Yankees last year (2.4, 3.5 mil), and up 20% and 29%, respectively, from comparable regional action ’08 (2.0, 2.9 mil).
Saturday’s telecast was the fourth-most viewed sports program of last week, behind three NBA Playoff games on ABC, ESPN and TNT.
Over 60% of the country got the Mets’ 2-1 victory, which lasted until after 11 PM ET and preempted Cops, America’s Most Wanted and portions of The Wanda Sykes Show.
The 2.4 rating is the highest for a regular season MLB telecast on FOX since August ’09 (Yankees/Red Sox in most markets).
