Nearly 70% of television homes in the Birmingham, AL, television market tuned into Auburn’s victory in the 2011 BCS National Championship Game.
Monday’s Auburn/Oregon BCS National Championship Game earned a staggering 67.0 rating in the Birmingham market, virtually even with last year’s Alabama/Texas title game on ABC (67.4).
Birmingham was easily the top market for the game, followed by Portland, OR (37.5).
Nashville (28.8), New Orleans (28.6), and Knoxville (27.7) rounded out the top five markets for the game. Nashville and Knoxville both ranked among the top five markets for last year’s National Championship Game as well.
The nation’s #1 television market, New York, earned a comparably paltry 8.1 rating for the game — the lowest among all metered markets. However, the 8.1 in New York represents approximately 609,000 TV homes, while the 67.0 in Birmingham equals just over 500,000.
Overall, the five lowest rated markets for Monday’s game were in the Northeast, according to USA Today.
