This year’s Wimbledon will be the last for play-by-play voice Dick Enberg.
Enberg told the San Diego Union-Tribune last week that he will call Wimbledon for the final time this year, so he can focus more on his “love” — calling Padres baseball.
“The decision was mine to make this my last Wimbledon,” Enberg said, “and ESPN was sensitive to give me a chance to say goodbye to an event that has been my favorite.”
Enberg has given up several national broadcasting gigs since being named the Padres’ lead play-by-play voice in 2009, including the NFL on CBS, the NCAA Tournament on CBS, and the Australian and French Open on ESPN. Enberg will call this year’s U.S. Open for CBS.
Prior to joining ESPN part-time in 2004, Enberg was part of the Wimbledon broadcast team during his tenure at NBC.
