On a day when three racing series got broadcast television exposure, NASCAR unsurprisingly topped the charts.
Sunday’s NASCAR Sprint Cup Coca-Cola 600 from Charlotte drew a 4.1 overnight rating on FOX, even with last year (4.1) and up a tick from 2010 (4.0).
This year’s Coca-Cola 600 is tied as the third-lowest rated in the metered markets since it moved to FOX in 2001.
Keep in mind the 4.1 overnight includes a half-hour delay caused by a FOX skycam malfunction.
Though low historically, Sunday’s race was easily the top auto racing draw of the day. The IndyCar Series Indianapolis 500 had a 3.8 overnight on ABC, and the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix had a 1.3 on NBC.
This marks the first time since the race moved to broadcast in 2001 that the Coca-Cola 600 has outdrawn the Indianapolis 500 in the overnight ratings. That excludes the postponed 2009 race.
Usually, the Indy 500 either ties or outdraws the Coca-Cola 600 in the overnights, with NASCAR coming out ahead in the final tally.
