Television ratings improved for the PGA Championship on CBS, but remained among the lowest in the past three decades.
Final round coverage of the PGA Championship drew a 3.9 final rating and 5.5 million viewers on CBS, up 15% in ratings and 13% in viewership from coverage opposite the Olympics last year (3.4, 4.9M), but down 5% and 9%, respectively, from 2011 (4.1, 6.1M).
The 3.9 rating is the fifth-lowest for final round coverage on broadcast TV since at least 1981 (ratings prior to 1982 were not available). Three of the five lowest-rated final round telecasts have taken place in the past six years.
Earlier in the day, final round coverage on TNT drew a 1.2 and 1.6 million viewers.
Saturday’s third round coverage drew a 2.6 final rating and 3.7 million viewers on CBS, up 30% in ratings and 32% in viewership from last year (2.0, 2.8M), and up 13% and 11%, respectively, from 2011 (2.3, 3.3M).
The CBS telecasts were the second and third oldest-skewing sporting events of the weekend on broadcast, with a median age of 61 on Saturday and 60 on Sunday. Only horse racing on NBC skewed older (63).
