The final game of the Pirates’ underdog run earned strong numbers on TBS Wednesday.
Game 5 of the Pirates/Cardinals National League Division Series earned a 3.9 U.S. rating and 6.1 million viewers on TBS Wednesday night, according to Nielsen fast-nationals — up 5% in ratings and 3% in viewership from Cardinals/Nationals Game 5 last year (3.7, 5.9M), but down 37% in both measures from Tigers/Yankees Game 5 in 2011 (6.2, 9.7M).
The Pirates/Cardinals finale ranks as the most-viewed MLB Division Series game since Cardinals/Phillies Game 5 in 2011 (8.4M).
Locally, Game 5 had a 33.6 rating in St. Louis and a 31.1 in Pittsburgh. The local rating in Pittsburgh ranks as the market’s second-highest on record for an MLB telecast, trailing only the Wild Card game against the Reds earlier this month.
Through Wednesday, TBS has averaged a 2.4 U.S. rating and 3.7 million viewers for MLB playoff coverage, up 9% in ratings and viewership from the comparable point last year (2.2, 3.4M).
