A year after a deal to join “NBA Countdown” fell through, former NBA coach Stan Van Gundy has joined ESPN — albeit on the radio.
Van Gundy has joined ESPN Radio as an analyst for ten NBA broadcasts during the upcoming season, ESPN announced Tuesday. It was not immediately clear whether the agreement would last past this season.
The move comes a year after Van Gundy nearly joined the cast of ESPN’s “NBA Countdown” pregame show. After that fell through, Van Gundy complained that the NBA league office influenced ESPN’s decision to go in another direction.
Other analysts working on ESPN Radio this season include Jon Barry, who replaces Dr. Jack Ramsay as the lead analyst, and P.J. Carlesimo.
This time last year, the team of Jim Durham and Ramsay opened the season for ESPN Radio. Durham died days after working the Opening Night game, and Ramsay was forced to end his broadcasting career during last year’s playoffs due to an unspecified health issue.
