The new college football playoff has forced one bowl game off of its traditional New Year’s Day date.
The Gator Bowl will move to January 2 the next two seasons and December 30 starting in 2017, airing in primetime each year. ESPN will televise the game.
The bowl had been part of the New Year’s Day rotation, airing in the afternoon on ESPN2 in recent years. However, with the college football playoff adding a third major bowl to New Year’s Day, the potential competition was likely too much.
There has been no word yet on the status of the other non-major New Year’s Day bowls — Capital One, Outback and Heart of Dallas. Next season, the Cotton, Rose and Orange bowls will air on New Year’s Day, with the latter two serving as the national semifinals.
