The NBA will officially announce its television deal Monday, and the terms are even more generous than originally reported.
According to multiple reports, the NBA will announce Monday morning that it has reached a nine-year media rights extension with ESPN and Turner Sports worth approximately $2.7 billion per year ($24 billion over the life of the contract). The extension will kick in with the 2016-17 season and last through 2024-25.
The reported terms are even more exorbitant than previous reports indicated. Sports Business Journal reported last month that the league was close to an eight year, $2.0 billion contract. The NBA makes $930 million per year in its current contract with ESPN and Turner.
The new deal will extend the NBA on TNT to 41 years and the NBA on ESPN/ABC to 23. CBS held NBA rights for 17 years and NBC had rights for twelve.
