After hitting a low last year, overnights for The Players Championship were among the best in the past decade.
Final round coverage of the PGA Tour Players Championship earned a 3.9 overnight rating on NBC Sunday afternoon, up 50% from last year (2.6) and down 32% from Tiger Woods’ victory in 2013 (5.7). The 3.9 is the third-highest for final round coverage of the event since 2004 (4.1), trailing only 2013 and 2009 (4.1).
The 3.9 is also the highest for a non-major golf telecast this year, topping the previous high of 3.0 for the final round of the Northern Trust Open.
Six of the past nine Sunday PGA Tour telecasts have had a double-digit increase in overnight ratings, the lone exceptions being Texas (-25%), New Orleans (-10%) and last week’s WGC Match Play (-10%).
On Saturday, third round coverage drew a 2.3 overnight — up 15% from last year (2.0) and down 23% from 2013 (3.0).
