The College World Series final got off to a weak start.
Game 1 of the Virginia/Vanderbilt College World Series final drew 1.2 million viewers on ESPN Monday night, down 32% from the same match-up last year (1.8M), down 24% from UCLA/Mississippi State in 2013 (1.6M), and the smallest audience for Game 1 of the final in five years — since South Carolina/UCLA in 2010 (1.23M to 1.19M).
Overall, the Commodores’ win earned the second-smallest audience for any game of the CWS final since at least 2008 (15 telecasts). It also had fewer viewers than Game 1 of the Florida/Michigan Women’s CWS final earlier in the month (1.5M).
Keep in mind Monday’s game had unusually strong competition from the United States/Colombia FIFA Women’s World Cup match on Fox Sports 1 (4.7M).
