The FOX broadcast network got off to a better start for its college football coverage, though last year set a low bar to pass.
The Virginia/UCLA college football game drew a 1.1 overnight rating on FOX Saturday afternoon, up 22% from Fresno State/USC in primetime last year (0.9). The network did not carry a week one game in 2013.
The Bruins’ comfortable win was easily the lowest rated college football game on broadcast in the metered markets. It was barely half the draw of ABC’s competing BYU/Nebraska game (2.0) and was more-than-doubled by Louisville/Auburn on CBS (2.6).
The slow start on FOX was a sharp contrast to sister station Fox Sports 1, which scored a 2.1 overnight for its Thursday night Michigan/Utah game. Of course, Michigan/Utah was a far higher-profile matchup than Virginia/UCLA.
