For the second straight week, overnight ratings dropped for the PGA Tour on broadcast TV.
Final round coverage of the PGA Tour Phoenix Open earned a 2.3 overnight rating on NBC Sunday afternoon, down 8% from last year (2.5) and down 12% from 2014 (2.6), both on CBS. The 2.3 is the event’s lowest final round overnight in four years (2.0).
The finish overlapped with the start of the Super Bowl, with NBC’s ratings dropping from a full point from 5:45-6 PM ET (2.9) to 6:30-7 PM (1.9) per Sports Business Daily.
Despite the decline, Sunday’s 2.3 overnight was the second-highest of the weekend for a non-NFL sporting event. Only the previous night’s Thunder/Warriors NBA game on ESPN did better in the metered markets (2.4).
On Saturday, third round action scored a 1.6 overnight — off 6% from last year (1.7) and 20% from ’14 (2.0). So far this season, all four PGA Tour rounds on broadcast television have had a decline in the overnights.
