Moving out of the NCAA Tournament’s shadow did little to boost the overnights for the PGA Tour Texas Open.
Final round coverage of the PGA Tour Texas Open earned a 1.6 overnight rating on NBC Sunday afternoon, up a tick from last year (1.5) but down 20% from 2014 (2.0). Both last year and in 2014, coverage faced competition from the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight.
The 1.6 overnight is the lowest of the season for final round PGA coverage on a broadcast network (13 telecasts). The previous low was a 1.7 for the final round at Torrey Pines in January.
Despite the season-low, Sunday’s telecast posted the first increase for any PGA round on broadcast since the WGC Match Play in March — snapping a streak of seven straight declines.
The final telecast of that streak was Saturday’s third round, which earned a 1.1 overnight — down 31% from last year (1.6) and down 21% from 2014 (1.4). The 1.1 is tied as the lowest for a third round window this season, matching Torrey Pines.
