The FIFA Confederations Cup continues to lag behind four years ago. In other news, ESPN’s MLB viewership is trending up, and the NHL Awards delivered a huge increase on NBCSN.
Confederations Cup Still Trailing 2013
- Through Wednesday, the FIFA Confederations Cup has averaged 1.1 million viewers on Telemundo — down 39% from 2013 (1.8M) but 129% from 2009, both of which aired on Univision. Wednesday’s Mexico-New Zealand match had 1.7 million, down 37% from Mexico’s second match in 2013 against Brazil, which aired in a similar window (2.7M). English-language coverage of the same match had just 298,000 viewers on Fox Sports 1, down 41% from 2013 on ESPN (505K). The FS1/ESPN figures include a half-hour of prematch coverage.
ESPN MLB Viewership Up
- ESPN has averaged a 0.7 rating and 831,000 viewers for Major League Baseball coverage this season, flat in ratings and up 7% in viewership from last year. Sunday Night Baseball in particular has combined for 2.0 million across on ESPN TV (1.9M) and WatchESPN (38K), up 13%. Though up overall, the network’s most recent telecast — Mets-Dodgers on Wednesday night — fell 22% from Nationals-Dodgers a year ago (from 858K to 673K).
Major Jump For NHL Awards
- The annual NHL Awards, which this year included the expansion draft for the [Las] Vegas Golden Knights, earned 595,000 viewers on NBCSN Wednesday night — up 248% from last year (171K) and up 413% from 2015 (116K). It was the most-watched NHL Awards ever on NBCSN.
