Nielsen’s out-of-home measure has already produced some noteworthy results. In other news, Mexico and the USMNT posted declines for their second Gold Cup matches, and Premier Boxing Champions sank to a new primetime low in the overnights.
Oohs and Aahs For Nielsen’s OOH
- Nielsen’s new out-of-home measurement increased last year’s Washington-Dallas NFL Thanksgiving Day audience by 40%, boosting the total from 35.1 to 48.7 million, Sports Business Journal reported Monday. The NBA’s Christmas Day games experienced similarly large gains, with most other events rising by less than 15%. Beyond the potentially massive increases for marquee events, out-of-home-viewing may be disproportionately strong on Friday and Saturday nights. SBJ noted that the addition of OOH viewing boosted Games 3 and 4 of last year’s World Series, which aired on a Friday and Saturday respectively, past the midweek Games 1 and 2.
El Tri, USMNT, Dip in Second Gold Cup Matches
- Thursday’s Mexico-Jamaica CONCACAF Gold Cup match had 2.9 million viewers on Univision, down 24% from Mexico’s second match in 2015 against Guatemala (3.8M), but up 45% from its second match in 2013 against Canada, which aired on UniMas (2.0M). English-language coverage drew 281,000 viewers on Fox Sports 1, up 231% from the 2015 match, which aired on Fox Sports 2 (85K). In other action, Wednesday’s United States-Martinique match pulled 934,000 viewers on UniMas and 800,000 on FS1 — down 28% and 23% respectively from the second-U.S. match in 2015, against Haiti (1.3M and 1.0M). Figures for this past weekend’s matches, Mexico-Curacao on Sunday and U.S.-Nicaragua on Saturday, were not immediately available.
PBC Hits Primetime Low on FOX
- Premier Boxing Champions earned a 0.7 overnight rating on FOX Saturday night, the lowest overnight yet for a primetime PBC card on over-the-air television. The previous low was a 0.8 for coverage on NBC in June of last year. Compared to the previous primetime cards on broadcast TV, overnights fell 68% from a March telecast on CBS (2.2) and 50% from a February window on FOX (1.4).
