The greatest player of his generation delivered on the court, and in the ratings, once again.
Sunday’s Cavaliers-Celtics NBA Eastern Conference Finals Game 7 had a 7.3 rating and 13.6 million viewers on ESPN, up 3% in ratings and 18% in viewership from the previous East Finals Game 7, Pacers-Heat on TNT in 2013 (7.1, 11.6M). Versus the previous conference final Game 7 on ESPN, Celtics-Heat in 2012, ratings fell 5% (from 7.7) but viewership increased 2% (from 13.3M).
Cleveland’s win peaked at an ESPN NBA record 17.5 million viewers from 10:30-11 PM ET.
Game 7 ranks as the most-watched NBA game in ESPN history, topping the previous high set by Celtics-Heat in 2012. Excluding the NBA Finals, it generated the third-largest NBA audience on any network since 2002 (Lakers-Kings Game 7: 23.8M).* It trails only Thunder-Warriors Game 7 in 2016 (16.0M) and Warriors-Rockets Game 7 the following night (14.8M), both of which aired on TNT.
LeBron James has now played in eight of the ten most-watched NBA games since 2002 and 14 of the top 19.
Game 7 also tied the fourth-highest NBA rating since ’02, trailing Thunder-Warriors, Warriors-Rockets and Celtics-Heat. It matched Heat-Lakers on Christmas Day 2004, the first head-to-head matchup between Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant.
Beyond the NBA, Cavs-Celtics scored the third-largest non-football audience in ESPN history, trailing two 2014 World Cup matches — U.S.-Portugal (18.2M) and Belgium-U.S. (16.5M).
Versus other sporting events, Game 7 outdrew this year’s NCAA Final Four on Turner — Michigan-Loyola (13.15M) and Villanova-Kansas (13.09M). However it posted a smaller audience than Kansas-Duke in the regional finals (15.4M, CBS) and, not surprisingly, the Villanova-Michigan national championship (16.0M, Turner).
It also outdrew last year’s Yankees-Astros MLB ALCS Game 7 on FS1, which faced college football competition (9.9M), and last month’s final round of The Masters on CBS (13.0M). It could not match this month’s Kentucky Derby on NBC (14.9M), though it had the same audience at peak.
Game 7 had a 4.9 rating and adults 18-49, down 4% from the last ECF Game 7 in 2013 (5.1). It was TV’s third-highest rating in the demo since the Academy Awards in March (6.8), behind Warriors-Rockets Game 7 the following night (5.7) and the premiere of ABC’s reanimated — and since-cancelled — “Roseanne” (5.2). Of note, Villanova-Michigan ranks fourth (4.8).
The game also had a 4.6 in adults 18-34; comparable figures in 2013 were not available.
