ESPN pushing for Mike Francesa and Chris Russo reunion on First Take
According to a report from New York Post reporter Andrew Marchand, ESPN is pushing for a “Mike & the Mad Dog” reunion by pairing Mike Francesa and Chris “Mad Dog” Russo on “First Take” with Stephen A. Smith. Francesa and Russo hosted the critically acclaimed “Mike & the Mad Dog” on New York City sports radio from 1989 to 2008. Currently, Russo serves as Smith’s opponent on Wednesdays and the current speculation is that the reunion would only have one guaranteed show, although ESPN is open to expansion should it be well-received.
Since unretiring for the third time, Francesa has been hosting the “The Mike Francesa Podcast” on the BetRivers Network. While there has been more than one attempt at a “Mike & the Mad Dog” reunion, the pair have a contentious relationship with few public appearances together since ending the radio show in 2008. Marchand reports that the decision of whether a “First Take” reunion of the pair takes place likely rests in Francesa’s hands. (New York Post 12.12)
Qatari photojournalist dies at World Cup
A second soccer journalist has passed away at the World Cup in a matter of 48 hours. The Gulf-Times confirmed that Al Kass TV photojournalist Khalid al-Misslam passed away ‘suddenly’ while covering the World Cup with the following statement: “Al- Misslam, a Qatari, died suddenly while covering the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022. We believe in Allah’s mercy and forgiveness for him, and send our deepest condolences to his family.” The circumstances surrounding his death are currently unknown.
Prominent US soccer journalist Grant Wahl passed away on December 10th after collapsing at Lusail Iconic Stadium while covering the Argentina vs Netherlands quarterfinal matchup. His body and possessions arrived in the United States earlier today. (Sports Bible 12.12)
ESPN debuts three-point shot distance tracker
ESPN debuted a new shot distance tracker during the Saturday night NBA Finals rematch between the Boston Celtics and the Golden State Warriors. The tracker will be used to measure three-point shots from 25+ feet. It appears as a small white box with the distance inside in a relatively unobtrusive manner. (Example: ESPN Twitter 12.10.)
