Viewership was not particularly high, but the Sixers and Warriors helped TNT to a modest increase and the top sports audience of the day.
Tuesday’s Sixers-Warriors NBA regular season game averaged 1.25 million viewers on TNT, up 7% from Pelicans-Nuggets on the same January night last year (1.16M) and the most-watched sporting event of the day. (Compared to Clippers-Lakers on the equivalent date of last season, January 24, viewership fell 5% from 1.31 million.)
Golden State’s win was their least-watched game on ABC, ESPN or TNT this season, save for a Martin Luther King Day matchup with Memphis that aired opposite an NFL playoff game.
Earlier in the night, Pacers-Celtics averaged 991,000 — down 42% from Lakers-Knicks on the same night last year (1.70M). (Compared to Celtics-Heat on the equivalent night of last season, viewership fell 5%.)
Ranking not far behind in third place for the night, a North Carolina-Georgia Tech men’s college basketball game drew 955,000 on ESPN — up 27% from Wake Forest-Duke a year ago (751K). Oklahoma State-Kansas followed at 642,000 (-13%), with the Loyola Marymount-Gonzaga nightcap finishing the tripleheader at 299,000. Over on ESPN2, Miami-NC State averaged 221,000 and Texas Tech-TCU 167,000, down 55% and 62% respectively from last year’s equivalent games (Indiana-Maryland: 489K; Texas A&M-Arkansas: 443K).
In other college action, Iowa-Indiana drew 368,000 on Big Ten Network (+36%). FS1 drew 205,000 for Marquette-Villanova, 96,000 for Seton Hall-DePaul and just 42,000 for Fresno State-UNLV.
Beyond basketball, a Newcastle-Aston Villa English Premier League match drew 202,000 on USA Network, while Liga MX soccer on TUDN chipped in 105,000. A Boston University-Northeastern men’s college hockey game drew just 16,000 on ESPNU.
