Mike Tyson, Patrick Mahomes and Beyonce helped Netflix to a record number of new subscribers in the final quarter of last year.
Netflix said Tuesday that it generated 18.91 million new subscriptions in Q4, up 44% from the same quarter last year (13.12M) and a record for any quarter in the history of the company. Q4 included the Tyson-Jake Paul fight in November and the streamer’s exclusive Christmas Day NFL doubleheader, which featured Mahomes’ Chiefs against the Steelers and a Ravens-Texans game in which Beyonce performed at halftime.
By comparison, Netflix generated just over 22 million new subscriptions in the three prior quarters combined. Overall, the streamer had 301.6 million subscriptions as of Q4, up 16% from the same point the prior year (260.3M). That figure includes shared accounts.
The announcement came the same day that Netflix said it would be raising the price of its plans, including an increase from $7 to $8 for its lowest ad-supported tier.
Netflix generated a Nielsen audience of more than 24 million for the two Christmas NFL games, the two largest audiences ever for an NFL game on a streaming service. (Keep in mind those figures include local over-the-air simulcasts in the home markets.)
The streamer reported a global audience exceeding 100 million for the Tyson-Paul fight, though those figures were an internal estimate and thus are not analogous to the third-party viewership estimates tracked on this site and most others.
